How to use the worldwide earthquake map
Begin with the selected time window and minimum magnitude because those settings determine which seismic events appear. Zoom out to observe broad plate-boundary patterns, then zoom in to separate nearby earthquakes in aftershock sequences or swarms. A dense group of markers is an observation of reported activity, not a forecast of a larger earthquake.
Open a marker and read magnitude together with depth, time, and location. The place label is a geographic description, not necessarily the community that experienced the strongest shaking.
What map markers can and cannot tell you
An epicenter marker identifies the point at the surface above the estimated underground source. It does not show the full fault rupture, the area of strong shaking, or expected damage. Those questions require products such as ShakeMap, intensity reports, hazard maps, and local impact information.
Monitoring coverage varies around the world. Well-instrumented regions can locate smaller events more completely than remote ocean areas or regions with fewer stations. Marker density therefore reflects both natural seismicity and the ability of networks to detect it.
Use live data responsibly
A live earthquake map is useful for checking earthquakes today and exploring global patterns, but it is not an official alert service or earthquake prediction system. If you feel shaking, protect yourself immediately and follow local government and emergency-management instructions rather than waiting for a web map to update.
